ASU Library Research Using VAX
Sandy Pesqueira, MCLI
By using the LIB function in the A1 system, users can access the ASU Library Catalog to do a
search for articles, books, periodicals, microfiche, and other
cataloged materials. The computer can find items by names, title,
author, selected words, call number, or series. Information
available on the system includes title, author, series, date of
publication, holdings (number of volumes), location, availability
of item, and call number.
Benefits of this service are additional research capabilities and
saved time by allowing preliminary research to ensure items are
available at ASU and available for checkout. If you see a book that
you want, you must visit the ASU Library and complete a card for
check out. Materials may also be requested via interlibrary loan by
contacting the Library Technical Services Department (LTS) or your
college library.
Procedure for connecting to the ASU Library Catalog:
- Connect to A1 on the VAX.
- At the "All-in-1 Professional Workstation" menu enter LIB to
access the Library/Media/Software catalog; press the RETURN key.
- A message will appear asking WHICH COLLEGE? Enter ASU, press
RETURN. NOTE: ASU is not one of the choices listed on the screen.
- A welcome message appears followed by a list of services
available. Select CARL, press RETURN. (CARL is the acronym for the
Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries.)
- At the next screen, you are asked to identify your terminal
(usually VT100). Make a selection and press RETURN.
- Press RETURN to enter the Public Access Catalog.
- The screen will show a welcome message; press RETURN to begin
the program.
- A list of offerings will appear. Enter the number 1 to access
the ASU LIBRARIES CATALOG (books, journal titles, other cataloged
materials).
- Instructions on how to use the CARL system will appear on the
screen.
- To exit out of CARL, type //EXIT (or if on modem, hang-up.)
